Now I know

Growing Season 7/2/2010

As Sarah was backing out of the driveway on the way to the airport, I poured myself another cup of tea and began to re-arrange my spice drawer. It seemed odd, even at the time. It was comforting though. There was an order to it, a plan. The nutmeg before the oregano, the tarragon before the thyme. Another cup of tea and out to the garden. Planting a load of beautifully assorted phlox in purples, lavenders and pinks, I rested back on my shovel, knowing that next spring the perennials would return in full glory. The same colors, the same blooms and the same heady, old world fragrance. There’s an order to gardening, a plan, a design…my design. If only my heart had an order to it.

“Now I know I have a heart, because it’s breaking.” The Tin Man

But now, not only am I still the Mom…I’m the Mom of a courageous and wonderful daughter. A daughter who has taught me to grow, albeit not exactly the way I would have planned it…so off to study my new French lesson, finish the damned novel I started 5 years ago and, just for the adventure, I think I’ll move the curry in front of the bay leaves.

    Greetings B and S,
It is such a pleasure to read what Mother Bev and Daughter Sarah write. Both write so eloquently.

It is a “hapsad” situation. Don’t look that up it is not in the dictionary. I am just happy and sad all at once. This is such an adventure into the unknown for both of you and I thank you both for taking us along.

Got the precious note from Sarah about our ski outing. I was our pleasure to play on the lake with you and Andrew. This memory came to mind as soon as I saw this post.

May God Bless you Dear Sarah with safety, health and productivity. May God bless you Dear Bev with peace, health and deep satisfaction with the courage and determination of the beautiful women you and John have raised.

Looking forward to the next post,

    Diane S

Sorting your spices and planting flowers sounds like a perfectly wonderful way to deal with some, out of your control, circumstances. The old movie with George Burns and John Denver called “God” gave me words that I has lived by — whenever you can’t control a situation, do something ordinary — shave, polish your shoes, wash windows—-arrange spices— it really does have a calming effect. We are all proud of your baby girl or should I say the George’s “Woman of the World”. I’m looking forward to those millet recipes. Love, Jan
